Thomas George Gondek, 74, passed away on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2019 at Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, IL. He was brave and relentless in his battle with cancer and other illnesses and died peacefully.

Thomas is survived by his wife June, his daughter Jessica Gondek and her husband Peter Van Ael, his sister Barbara Carloni (Gondek), and her husband Keith and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth Gondek.

Thomas was born December 14th, 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the eldest child of George and Ruth.  Raised in a modest middle class home, Thomas was the first in his family to complete college pursuing his passion for painting.  He received his BFA from the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee in 1967, and earned his MFA from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1969.  Thomas and June met as teenagers and they married August 5, 1967.  The couple moved away from Milwaukee and began a journey that took them around the country, as Thomas taught college art at several universities over a career that spanned four decades. Thomas joined the faculty as a chairperson at Kendall College of Art and Design in 1981, and retired in 2008 as a Full Professor. June was his faithful partner in life and the couple celebrated over fifty years of marriage. His spirit and influence continues to live on in the artwork he produced and students he taught during his lifetime. His daughter Jessica and son-in-law Peter carry on his passion and dedication to art and education in their creative work and teaching careers.  May Thomas paint in the eternal studio of the beyond and rest in peace.  Per his wishes a private service was held on July 8th, 2019 for the immediate family. Thomas is loved and missed.

" I hope to depart in no other way than looking back with love and wistfulness and thinking, oh the paintings that I would have made..."
