Obituary

Robert Charles Wines, 78, died May 9, 2020, in Wheaton, IL, just days after his birthday.

Born in Lansing, MI, the oldest of 10 Wines children, Bob was recognized as the leader among his siblings, whether they were looking for fun or mischief. Bob spent his childhood in the Detroit area attending Visitation High School, where he starred on the basketball team. In the early 1960s the Wines family moved to Twinsburg, OH, where Bob met his first wife Launie, and they had two children, Stephanie and Patrick. Bob worked as a salesman in the steel industry before going back to school at Michigan State University and graduating from Wayne State University.

Pursuing his passion for law enforcement, he became an officer for Huntington Woods, MI. Bob’s love of cars was legendary, and periodically while on patrol he would come across a car that he just had to buy. After more than a decade as an officer, Bob moved into union work for AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He then found his dream job with POAM, the Police Officers Association of Michigan, where he served police officers in departments across Michigan as their union representative. He was passionate about quality service, advocacy and fairness as he worked through negotiations and investigated issues.

In 1990, Bob married Debi, and together they built a life of love, support, Elvis music and cherished trips to Hawaii until she passed in 2004. In his retirement, Bob lived close to his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. His beloved dogs were never far from his side. Known for his quiet reserve and gentle manner, Bob had a gift for resolving conflicts and helping those around him feel heard and understood.

Bob’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease was a tough one, but he never stopped finding joy in those around him. He was loved by many and is now surrounded by those he has missed dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents Kathryn Elizabeth Wines and Robert Joseph Wines, his wife Deborah Wines, former wife Launie Wines, sister Patricia Wheeler, brother John Wines and granddaughter Caroline Elizabeth Enright.

He is survived by daughter Stephanie (Patrick) Enright, son Patrick (Shelley) Wines, grandchildren Alexandra (Wesley) Knott, Justine Enright, Zachary Enright, Jena Wines, Renee (Jordan) Bradley, Caitlyn Pence, Charlie Wines, Madison Wines. He is also survived by his siblings Barbara (Bob) Thorburn, Mike Wines, Mary Habbyshaw, Margaret “Lolly” (Grant) Griswold, Kathryn (Charles) Thurman, Judy (Richard) Halvorsen and Susan (James) Wheeler and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of the United States or the Alzheimer’s Association.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held in Michigan in the months ahead.
