Mary Catherine Rita (Heiderscheidt) Sobyra, 77, of Palatine IL, passed away February 7, 2020.
Born to John and Rita (Thoma) Heiderscheidt on June 20, 1942 in Chicago, IL, Mary grew up in St. Alphonse Parish and graduated from St. Benedict High School.
She met her husband Raymond A. Sobyra while working at Federal Life Insurance Company and they were married on July 7, 1962 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Chicago IL. They had 4 children whom they lovingly raised in Arlington Heights, IL.
A few years after her husband’s passing in 1980, Mary started working at Earthen Vessels Christian Bookstore in Arlington Heights, IL for nearly 20 years, followed by Lighthouse Christian Products in Schaumburg, IL for 14 years.
Mary was a devout Catholic, dedicated parishioner, and church volunteer throughout her life. At Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Mary was involved in the choir, bereavement ministry, funeral mass preparation, and as a Eucharistic minister. She belonged to a prayer group at St. Collette and was a member of St. Raymond Parish for several years before becoming a parishioner at St. Edna where she dedicated time to the Angels Prayer Ministry.
Mary also filled her time as a leader for the Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls, the Secretary of a Bowling League and also belonged to TOPs. She was a very busy lady.
Mary was known for her sticker covered postcards sent to friends and loved ones. She also cherished the nearly 1000 sets of salt and pepper shakers she collected over the years. She adored the “music” of wild songbirds and had an appreciation of God’s work around her. She was a proud grandmother who enjoyed time spent with her family. Her sarcastic but lighthearted sense of humor created contagious smiles wherever she went.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, John P. and Rita V. (Thoma) Heiderscheidt, her loving husband, Raymond A. Sobyra, his parents William and Stella (Bernal) Sobyra, and brother-in-law Stanley Sobyra.
She is survived by her children, Theresa Mary Sobyra, Catherine Anna (Mark) Rayner, Helen Rita (Stewart) Abbink, and Joseph Raymond (Kerri) Sobyra, along with grandchildren, Derek (Fiancé Brandy Haggard), Justin, Nicholas (Nick), Joseph (Joey) Abigail (Abby), Faith, Lillian (Lily) and great-granddaughter, Paige Haggard.
She is also survived by her older brother, Michael (Carol) Heiderscheidt, younger sisters Jeanette (Richard) Verschoor, Betty (Bob) Henning, sister-in-law Dolores Sobyra, brother-in-law William (Karen) Sobyra Jr., and many cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces & nephews.
Mary believed in a Mission that Deacon Don Grossnickle engages in; this Mission helps to purchase cows whose milk can save the lives of moms and babies in Uganda. In Lieu of flowers the family would like Donations made to MAAPF Microfinance Alliance Africa Projects Foundation C/O Our Lady of The Wayside, 4434 W. Park, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. That way a cow can be purchased in Mary’s name. If you would like more information, look them up on Facebook at Microfinance Alliance Africa Project Foundation.
