Obituary

Gary Kane Smith, age 74, passed away on January 17, 2019, surrounded by his family at his home in Carol Stream, IL. He was born January 2, 1945 to the late Woodrow and Shirley, nee Kane, Smith.

Gary is survived by his loving wife Annette, nee Suchecki, Smith; daughter DeAnna (Mike) Krejci; son Jason (Michelle) Smith; grandchildren Ella, Avery, and Jake; sister Sherry Ragone and nephews Eric and Kevin Bull.

Gary attended Northwestern University and graduated with both an Engineering degree and a lifelong devotion to the NU Wildcats football and basketball teams. He went on to work for Honeywell for 30 years and also earned an MBA in Finance from Loyola.

Gary met and married his soulmate, Annette, in 1969. Together they raised 2 children and lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. To share his fun-loving spirit with everyone around him, Gary organized many clam bakes, road rallies, costume parties, and social events. He loved a good prank, whether on the planning end or receiving end. Gary spent time simply enjoying life from fishing with his father to teaching his children how to bait a hook; he loved to try to win at the horse track, on the golf course, and in countless sports pools and was always a good-sport with a hearty laugh regardless of the outcome. Many fond memories are from family road trips; later in life, one of Gary’s favorite pastimes would be exploring the country with Annette, together drinking wine and playing cards by a campfire.

Gary will be remembered by his friends and family as someone they could always count on, and by his children as a caring father who taught them the value of family and selflessness, most evidently through two things: Operation Christmas, a charity for children in need which he and Annette started in 1972; and the love and devotion he showed to his wife on a daily basis. Inseparable from her for almost 50 years, Gary would be in love with his best friend, even through Alzheimer’s, right to the end.

As per Gary’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. Instead, a Celebration of Life event will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and in honor of the charity that Gary started, donations to Operation Christmas may be sent to 197 Secretariat Court, Wheaton IL 60189.
